
Riverside High School's Family and Consumer Sciences, Independent Living, Teen Living, Family Living and Culinary Arts Class Students recently visited Oakwood Terrace, a memory care community in Moosic, and "decked the halls", and trees as well, for the upcoming holiday season. Teachers Stephanie McManus and Megan Gerlach assisted the students in this worthwhile project.

Oakwood Terrace in Moosic, in partnership with The Alzheimer's Foundation of America, held its annual Candle Lighting Ceremony in November to "honor, remember and care" for those who were and are afflicted with Alzheimer's and other memory impairment.

The "Issues in Aging" class toured the facility and discussed Alzheimer's, dementia and memory care issues. The Coalition for Aging Services of Lackawanna County met recently at Oakwood Terrace in Moosic to plan for upcoming events, including membership recruiting. Members of the Coalition are representatives from within the aging network who come together in order to aide one another in ensuring that quality care, services and programs are available to older adults, their families and their caregivers.

Over 27 shoppers attended Oakwood Terrace's Jewelry Sale Fundraiser at Charming Charlie at The Shoppes at Montage on September 12. Oakwood Terrace in Moosic prepares for upcoming Jewelry Fundraiser to benefit the Alzheimer's Association "Walk to End Alzheimer's". The fundraiser will take place on Monday, September 12th from 5-7PM at Charming Charlie at The Shoppes at Montage, Moosic. Obtain a bracelet from Sylvia the night of the event, present it to the cashier upon checkout and 10% of your total purchase will be donated to the cause. Topics discussed were: Veterans Aids and Attendance Benefits, Long Term Care Insurance, Reverse Mortgages, Understanding Alzheimer's and other forms of memory loss, and latest Health Reform Laws.

Most Reverend Bishop Joseph Bambera, Diocese of Scranton, visited and bestowed a blessing on the residents and staff of Oakwood Terrace in Moosic for National Alzheimer's Awareness Month in November.

In August 2010, Oakwood Terrace installed a state-of-the-art Community Health and Management Platform called ALMSA. This software is a valuable tool for our nursing staff in regards to charting medications, assessments, care plans, care tasking, and more.
Janine Starinsky, Executive Director of Oakwood Terrace, recently completed the educational seminar entitled "Alzheimer's and Dementia Care" sponsored by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) and has been appointed as a Certified Dementia Care Manager (CDCM). She will be listed as a practitioner on NCCDP.org website.
On July 17, Oakwood Terrace hosted a car wash which raised money for the Alzheimer's Association through donations, a bake sale, and a basket raffle. The weather was good, and the shiny clean cars looked great!
